The Fisherman and his Wife

SPECIAL FOCUS: Ecology (coastal wetlands), Social Responsibility

From its first tour three months before the devastation of Hurricane Katrina to an invitation to the 21st Annual Kennedy Center Arts Open House in Washington, D.C. September, 2006, this show’s theme focus on wetlands ecology has been received with great interest in several states, and (in Spanish) in two other countries. Adapted by Calliope Puppets to a setting in south Louisiana, real issues are woven into the traditional Brothers Grimm tale of the wife who asks too much of the magical fish her husband catches. Dynamic hand puppets, original music, and audience participation encourage understanding of the effects human decisions have on the environment. Written in consultation with Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program personnel, Calliope Puppets promote a message crucial not only to the people of the fragile Gulf Coast area, but world wide, as human and natural resources are affected.
