Calliope Puppets present residency focuses on Conflict Resolution, as presented in the DVD and manual “Choices in Conflict Resolution”.  The introduction featured students creating adaptations of a familiar tale.

PUPPETS & PAJAMAS: The Jazz Cats Marionettes by Julia Yerkov Kline, presented by N.O. Strings Attached at Calliope Puppet Center, February 26

World traveled puppeteer Julia Yerkov-Kline presented a show featuring her beloved “Jazz Cats” – half life-sized jazz and blues musicians who, although they did not speak, communicated clearly to all ages. Toddlers to adults were mesmerized by the characters as they came to life before their eyes, and all enjoyed the question and answer session with Julia after the show.

Toy Theater inspired by Clementine Hunter

Animate scenes in Clementine Hunter’s paintings. What were the people she painted doing and saying? Participants will focus in to select one area of a painting. They will re-create the background with simple materials, then build quick rod puppets of the painting’s people and put words in their mouths in short performances. Participants will leave with a toy theater stage and the puppets they create. Have fun imagining the world inside a painting, and bringing it to life!

The Southern Puppeteers Series at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art featured inspiration by New Orleans artist Jeffry Cook. Children viewed and responded to his work “Makin’ of a Melody”, then made puppets and house/stages of found objects and recycled materials. The puppets came to life instantly, visiting each others’ houses, and also making plans to meet and continue their new friendships after the workshop!

As this Prince gets a kiss from two Princesses, you should know that there are now more princes, princesses, and frogs in the world, following the Puppet Tales Workshop focused on the original Brothers Grimm tale. Participants ages 5 through adult heard the tale, made puppets, and performed their very own version to an appreciative audience of parents! The two hour workshop flew by, with some new puppets planning as they left Calliope Puppets Studio, to meet to tell more stories together in the future!

“Fit for a King: Tales of Ridiculous Royalty” is the next PUPPETS & PAJAMAS event at Calliope puppet Center. In celebration of the fun and playful spirit of Mardi Gras, Calliope Puppets presents a program including “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and “The Frog Prince”. Wear your pajamas – and some beads!

Puppet Tales Workshop: January 9, 2010 will feature the Brothers Grimm tale The Frog Prince.

Participants will listen to the original story, then make sock and fabric hand puppets of either a princess or a prince, and a frog. Students will learn how to manipulate a hand puppet to show emotions and actions.Working in teams the participants will use a studio puppet theater to present the story for each other, and for parents at the end of the workshop.

Class limit: 25

AGES: 6 – 12.

Teachers of any grade level are invited for a monthly night:

• for workshops in quick, simple, inexpensive, and effective activities to use right away to engage students across the curriculum through puppetry

• to receive appreciation for their creativity in their daily efforts to reach each student

• to encourage problem solving and idea sharing with educators from other schools and grade levels

• to access materials, books, and general information on the history and use of puppetry

• to relax, have fun, be energized and inspired.

Each night will feature a different short hands-on workshop, including time for experimentation with it and for discussion. Also, open to suggestions in advance and during workshop on specific techniques, curriculums, and issues you would like addressed. This is a working studio with a wide variety of tools, equipment, materials, books, and other resources available.
