Field Trips
For up to 30 students, make a visit to a professional artist’s studio. Learn about what goes into the work of a puppeteer, see the international puppet museum, and participate in a workshop and/or see a short performance.
FIELD TRIP OPTIONS:
OPTION # 1: Puppet Manipulation Workshop
Up to 30 children ages 8 and up will:
1. Tour the workspace of a professional puppeteer, to understand the many facets of the work.
2. Experience a geography-based tour of the “International Puppet Museum”, to see a wide variety of puppets and learn about their techniques, materials, and traditions.
3. Participate in “What Is A Puppet?” creative dramatics game, in which students will become conscious of how emotions are communicated through unconscious movement, and how this knowledge is transferred into meaningful communication through a puppet.
4. Watch a 20 minute performance by Calliope Puppets and ask questions..
Two hours
Fee: $200.00
OPTION # 2: Puppet Making Workshop
Up to 30 children ages 6 and up will:
1. Tour the workspace of a professional puppeteer, to understand the many facets of the work.
2. Experience a geography-based tour of the “International Puppet Museum”, to see a wide variety of puppets and learn about their techniques, materials, and traditions.
3. Make a simple puppet of their own, focusing on a particular technique selected in collaboration with group leader.
4. Watch a 20 minute performance by Calliope Puppets and ask questions..
Two hours
Fee: $200.00
OPTION # 3: Puppet Theater Performance
Up to 40 children ages 4 – 9 will:
1. Be introduced to the workspace of a professional puppeteer.
2. See and hear explanation of puppet types and manipulation techniques.
3. Watch a 45 minute performance by Calliope Puppets (selected in consultation with group leader) and ask questions.

APPLICABLE NATIONAL STANDARDS
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Standard 3: Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts.
Standard 4: Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language (e.g., conventions, style, vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes.
Standard 11: Students participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical members of a variety of literacy communities.
Standard 12: Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information).
THEATRE:
Content Standard: 1: Script writing by the creation of improvisations and scripted scenes based on personal experience and heritage, imagination, literature, and history
Content Standard: 2: Acting by developing basic acting skills to portray characters who interact in improvised and scripted scenes
Content Standard: 6: Comparing and incorporating art forms by analyzing methods of presentation and audience response for theatre, dramatic media (such as film, television, and electronic media), and other art forms
Content Standard: 7: Analyzing, evaluating, and constructing meanings from improvised and scripted scenes and from theatre, film, television, and electronic media productions
Content Standard: 8: Understanding context by analyzing the role of theatre, film, television, and electronic media in the community and in other cultures
